A cable that feels unusually warm, a hot plug, or a faint burning smell is not something to ignore. Understanding why cables overheat can help you act early, protect your property and avoid a small electrical fault becoming a serious fire risk.
Some warmth can be normal. For example, a charger, appliance flex or lighting fitting may become mildly warm while in use. What is not normal is a cable, plug, socket or consumer unit that is hot to touch, discoloured, smells burnt or repeatedly trips the circuit. Switch off the affected circuit or appliance if it is safe to do so, avoid using it again, and arrange for a qualified electrician to investigate.
Why cables overheat: the simple explanation
Electricity moving through a cable creates a small amount of heat. Cables are designed to carry a set amount of current safely, with their size, insulation type and installation method all taken into account. When too much current passes through a cable, or when resistance builds up at a connection, the heat can rise beyond what the cable insulation can safely handle.
This is why correctly designed and tested electrical installations matter. The cable must be suitable for the circuit, the protective device must be correctly selected, and every connection must be secure. If one part of that chain is wrong, the cable can deteriorate over time or overheat much more quickly under load.
Overheating does not always mean the whole cable is at fault. Sometimes the problem is concentrated at a loose terminal in a socket, switch, plug or consumer unit. These points of high resistance can become extremely hot, even where the circuit breaker has not tripped.
The most common causes of overheating cables
Overloaded circuits and extension leads
A circuit can overheat when too many high-demand appliances are used at once. Kettles, air fryers, tumble dryers, portable heaters, washing machines and electric showers all draw substantial current. Several of these appliances running from the same circuit can put it under unnecessary strain.
Extension leads are a common weak point, especially where one extension lead is connected to another or a multi-way adaptor is overloaded. A lead buried under a rug, trapped behind furniture or coiled tightly on a reel cannot release heat properly. Cable reels should always be fully unwound when supplying high-load equipment.
It depends on the appliance and the circuit. A single low-power mobile phone charger is very different from a fan heater running for hours. If a particular socket becomes hot whenever an appliance is used, stop using both until they have been checked.
Loose or damaged connections
Loose connections are one of the most concerning causes of electrical overheating. They may develop through poor installation, movement over time, worn accessories or damage to a plug and flex. Rather than electricity flowing cleanly through the connection, resistance is created. That resistance produces heat.
Typical warning signs include crackling, buzzing, flickering lights, a loose socket faceplate, scorch marks around a plug or a burning plastic smell. Do not tighten electrical terminals yourself unless you are competent and the circuit has been safely isolated. The source of the issue must be identified, and any heat-damaged accessories or cable sections may need replacing.
Incorrect cable size for the load
Every cable has a current-carrying capacity. If a cable is too small for the circuit or appliance it serves, it may overheat before the protective device operates. This risk can arise with older alterations, poorly planned DIY work, garage supplies, outbuildings, cooker circuits and additions to an existing installation.
Cable capacity is not based on size alone. A cable installed in insulation, inside conduit, grouped with other cables or run through a warm roof space may need to carry less current than the same cable installed in open air. A qualified electrician applies the requirements of BS 7671 when designing or altering circuits, accounting for these conditions rather than simply matching what appears to be there already.
Cables covered by insulation or unable to cool
Heat needs somewhere to go. Cables installed beneath loft insulation, surrounded by thermal material, bundled tightly together or enclosed in confined spaces can retain more heat than expected. This is particularly relevant after loft boarding, insulation upgrades, kitchen refurbishments or work in roof voids.
Modern homes are generally better insulated, which is good for energy efficiency but can change the conditions around electrical cables. The existing wiring may be safe, or it may require assessment and adjustment. It is not a reason to remove insulation indiscriminately, but it is a good reason to have altered areas checked properly.
Damaged, ageing or poor-quality wiring
Crushed flexes, pierced cables, rodent damage and brittle insulation can all create faults that lead to overheating. Older wiring may also have insulation that has hardened or deteriorated with age, particularly near heat sources or in areas exposed to sunlight, damp or repeated movement.
A damaged cable may not fail immediately. It can continue to work while its condition worsens, which is why visual checks matter. Look for splits, exposed copper, taped repairs, flattened flexes and plugs that no longer fit firmly. Replacement is usually safer and more cost-effective than attempting to keep a damaged lead in service.
Warning signs that need prompt action
A tripping circuit is frustrating, but it is often doing exactly what it should: responding to a fault or overload before further damage occurs. Repeatedly resetting a circuit breaker without finding the cause can make the situation worse.
Take the following signs seriously:
- A burning smell, smoke, sparking or visible scorching around a socket, switch, plug or consumer unit.
- A socket, plug or cable that becomes hot rather than slightly warm during normal use.
- Lights flickering, appliances cutting out, buzzing accessories or breakers that keep tripping.
- Discoloured plastic, melted insulation, loose socket outlets or damaged appliance flexes.
If there is smoke, flames or an immediate danger, get everyone clear of the area, call 999 and do not attempt to tackle an electrical fire with water. If it is safe and you know which circuit is affected, switch it off at the consumer unit. For a suspected fault without fire, stop using the affected equipment and arrange an urgent inspection.
What an electrician checks when cables overheat
Finding the cause is more involved than replacing the nearest socket. A competent electrician will first identify what is connected to the circuit, how much load it carries and whether the issue occurs consistently or only when a certain appliance is in use.
Testing may include checking the condition of accessories and connections, verifying protective devices, measuring circuit performance and inspecting cable routes where accessible. They will also look for signs of incorrect alterations, overloaded circuits, damaged insulation and heat effects at terminals.
The right repair depends on the fault. It may be as straightforward as replacing a damaged socket or plug, or it may involve correcting a poor connection, separating loads across suitable circuits, upgrading a consumer unit, replacing a cable run or rewiring part of the property. The aim is not just to restore power, but to make sure the circuit is safe, compliant and suitable for how the property is actually used.
Preventing overheating in everyday use
A few sensible habits reduce the risk. Avoid overloading adaptors, do not run high-load appliances from a lightweight extension lead, and keep flexes away from heaters, doorways and areas where they can be crushed. Never cover an extension lead with rugs or bedding, and fully unwind cable reels before use.
For landlords, reports of warm sockets, frequent tripping or damaged accessories should be treated as maintenance issues requiring prompt attention.
